The Hines’ family attends a small school where there is no Varsity lacrosse program. In his search for opportunities for the girls to get a full lacrosse season experience, Tim discovered that he was not alone. Parents of home school students were also seeking ways to have their children involved in team sports during the school year.

Tim, who had played lacrosse for Towson University and had participated on the FCA Lacrosse Men’s Master’s team, decided to partner with Steve Medinger (Northern MD FCA Director) and FCA Lacrosse to create a girl’s varsity team to compete in a full Spring season. It was important to Tim and other parent’s that the team have a foundation of Biblical principles and be an experience that exemplifies Christ-based instruction and leadership and emphasizes positive relationships among the players.

Made up of high school students who are home schooled or attend a school that does not offer lacrosse as a varsity sport, the team competed in their first season against various area private schools and club teams through the spring of 2010.

After a successful first season, the word spread about the FCA Lady Falcons and the unique opportunity for an underserved population of athletes. Building on last year’s success, the Lady Falcons entered the Capital Area Lacrosse League (CALL) for the 2011 season and ended with a record of 12-4 overall. The Falcons continued their home field winning streak for a second straight year and made it all the way to the CALL championship game.

With various highlights throughout the season, the Falcons made a name for themselves in the Baltimore/DC area racking up big wins against programs such as Calverton, Rockbridge Academy, and Chapelgate Christian Academy.

To an athlete, there is nothing quite like the feeling of winning, but what makes a good team great is the purpose behind the wins. Following the FCA model for team principles, the Lady Falcons strive to be a team that honors God in all that they do. Coach Hines expressed that his favorite part about coaching this team is how the girls get along with each other and their opponents. “I could really see the unity in the relationships and the unity that Christ makes happen because we make God the center, not just winning or statistics” says Coach Hines. He adds, “It is a blessing to experience. The girls really connect as a team and it is obvious that they like each other. They build up and encourage one another.”

The players, parents, and coaches for the Lady Falcons appreciate the Christ-centered atmosphere among the team, but also long to extend that atmosphere to the teams that they interact with. Following the FCA mission statement of impacting the world for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes and coaches, the Lady Falcons pray before and after every game. Win or lose, each of the girls on the FCA team approaches the opposing team after the match to offer them a bag of cookies and a verse from the Bible. During home games, the team invites their opponents to join them in prayer to signify that despite the names on their jersey’s or the color of their kilts, all the athletes are united under Christ.

The Lady Falcons experience inspiring devotional times throughout the season where they look at a passage of scripture and apply it to their lives as athletes. Teaching the players leadership, Coach Hines encourages a player-led devotional once a week. Further developing the girls’ desire to be more like Christ, Coach Hines facilitates a team community service day.

After a successful second season, the Lady Falcons bid farewell to five graduating seniors, some of who will go on to play lacrosse in college. With five players nominated for all-league teams and a successful second season under their belts, Coach Tim and the Lady Falcons look to continue the FCA team next year. Many players, coaches, and families don’t realize it, but in 2010, FCA Lacrosse had 63 teams playing around the nation in some tournament under the banner of FCA Lacrosse. Praise God!

Last summer, 19 boys from Chapel Hill, N.C. and the surrounding areas chose to represent FCA Lacrosse in the U-9 Division of the Battle of Williamsburg, VA lacrosse tournament. The boys, mostly part of the North Chatham Youth League, sharpened their lacrosse skills as they played three youth teams from Virginia.

Coach Jeff Taylor said, “When we looked around, there were not many U-9 travel opportunities in North Carolina. With the success of Duke and UNC locally, we felt we needed to help grow the sport by supporting a U-9 team.” Although the boys had lots of fun on the field, the best part of the trip for most was the two days of fun and fellowship that they shared at The Great Wolf Lodge.

Coach Chris Mann who helped organize the group stated that the team was a great success with the parents too. “We received significant feedback from the parents and family members just how much the boys loved the opportunity to learn more about Christ and FCA while playing the game that they love” Mann said.

Word must have gotten around. In 2011, North Chatham Youth Lacrosse has received significant interest regarding the team and may need to carry a second U-9 team! Currently the FCA North Carolina Black Hawks are expecting to attend the Battle of Williamsburg again as well as the Richmond Summer Slam youth lacrosse tournament.

Working with Coach Chris Mann and Coach Jeff Taylor, FCA Lacrosse was able to establish it’s youngest team ever last year at the U-9 level. This group of high school lacrosse players decided to get together and enter this Syracuse tournament as a team that would represent Christ both on and off the field. These young ladies desire to share their faith with others in the world of lacrosse. Donning our FCA Lacrosse reversible pennies, the team took to the indoor fields and played in four competitive games.

At the end of the day, the girls finished with two wins and two close calls. Off the field, they were able to enjoy fun and fellowship as a team. Between games, the girls gathered as a huddle to hear from Syracuse University Student Athlete, Naomi Carlson who spoke to the players about how you can use your sport to glorify God and about her passion for Christ. She shared her experiences about learning how to put aside her own plans and be open to what God has for her. The girls were reminded of how to give God the glory regardless of the scoreboard and to encourage one another as much as possible.

Congrats to all those girls involved for pioneering an FCA women’s lacrosse in your area. We look forward to many more events to come! If you are interested in getting further connected with FCA Lacrosse Women’s Ministry or playing on an FCA Team please contact FCA’s Women’s Director, Merissa Bogdanor at (merissaeide@gmail.com) or by calling 410-891-2643.

They recently brought home Championships at the NDP Tournament of Champions (U-15 and U-17) in Wesley Chapel, Florida as well as the Adrenaline Challenge (High School) in Del Mar, California.

While people were celebrating the New Year's holiday weekend, and winter was settling all over the country, a pair of FCA Lacrosse teams (U-15 and U-17) competed in the 2011 Dicks Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions in Tampa, FL. The tournament is an invitational event featuring teams which qualified by winning select elite tournaments around the country.

Off the field each team along with the parents were blessed to spend time in fellowship together while concentrating on the theme of the week which was God’s Wisdom. Players, Coaches and Parents focused their journey together around the book Wisdom Walks – 40 Life Principles for a Significant and Meaningful Journey together. A real highlight of their time together was hearing from former Maryland great, Frank Urso (4 x 1st Team All American). Frank's story of success on the field, the challenges of life, and faith was incredibly powerful. They were thrilled with the many new relationships that were started and strengthened with Christ together down in Florida.

In the U-15 Gold Medal Championship game, the FCA U-15 Team defeated Breakers Lacrosse of Baltimore, 6-3. The FCA U-15 Team was made up of the following individuals: Lucas Bailey (NY), Alexander Ballatori (NY), Philip Boukas (NY), Brendan Collins (MD), Jack Falk (DC), Danny Fowler (NY), Peyton Garrett (CA), Trevor Hodgins (NY), Scott Kirchner (NY), Blake Knoblock (CO), Samuel Lynch (MD), Hugh Mosko (MD), Garrett Parsons (CA), Riley Peters (MD), Jack Prutting (MD), John Puckhaber (MD), Colin Riehl (VA), Winston Robinson (CA), Jake Stevens (MD), Aaron Trowbridge (PA) and Vail Urso (PA). In the U-17 Gold Medal Championship game, FCA got off to a fast start building a 5-0 lead, but the advantage dwindled to 6-3 at the half. Team Florida continued to battle back and actually took the lead late in the second half and went up 9-7 with approximately 3-1/2 minutes remaining in the game. FCA then had a late run tying the game with less than a minute to play and netted the game winner in OT.

Next, it was off to so more sunny weather at the prestigious Adrenaline Challenge Tournament in Del Mar, California. FCA Lacrosse had two High School teams competing in the event which has become one of the top recruiting tournaments on the West Coast.

Off the field each team along with the parents were blessed to spend time in fellowship together while concentrating on the theme of Pride and Humility. Specifically, players, coaches, and parents concentrated on Proverbs 13:10 “Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice”. They took and in-depth look at the differences between Quarterback Vince Young (Tennessee Titans) and Andy Dalton (TCU) after their Rose Bowl Victory performances.

The FCA SoCal Blue team ended up winning the high school division, defeating Orange County Force, in the Championship Game. The FCA SoCal Orange Team, were semi-finalists as well losing to the eventual championship FCA team in an epic battle. What a display for all as both teams, coaches, and even referees gathered for prayer at midfield prior to the game.
